ROBERT CAPA
March 25 th – September 16 th 2012
set up by Magnum Photos – the famous photographic agency that Capa himself founded in 1947 together with Henri Cartier-Bresson and David Seymour – to pay tribute to one of the most important photographers of the 20th century.
The exhibition path – desplaying 98 black and white photos – starts off with the first reportage accomplished in Copenhagen in 1932 on the occasion of Leon Trotsky’s lecture during which the exiled Russian laid bare, for the first time, the violence of the Soviet regime under Stalin’s leadership.

The exhibition chronicles, through meaningful Capa’s images, the years of the Popular Front in Paris, the Spanish Civil War, the Japanese invasion of China, up to the outbreak of World War II, which Capa witnessed on the different front-lines, including the landing of American troops on the French Normandy coast and the liberation of Paris.
Farther along the path there are his photo-reports accomplished in the Soviet Union in 1947 and in Israel in 1948 where Capa documented the birth of the Jewish State, and the photo-report in Indochina where he died by stepping on a land-mine in May 25th 1954.
A series of portraits of the photographer's friends end the exhibition path: such renowned artists are portrayed as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
